Kendra Preston Leonard and I have been working together as writing partners since 2016. Dr. Leonard is a poet, playwright, lyricist, and librettist—as well as a scholar focusing on music and screen history and women and music. As a librettist, Dr. Leonard addresses social justice issues through the lenses of history and mythology, focusing on those involving people of marginalized identities, the environment, and the nature of compassion. She is committed to creating texts that performers will want to perform and teach.
As a team, our projects are guided by a shared interest in social justice in general and particularly relating to gender, neurodivergence, and disability. We design our projects for diverse performers with a range of ability levels, from college music students to professional companies. We value instrumental combinations and staging that will allow our work to be performed by organizations of different sizes and means. Additionally, we are committed to creating works that can be performed in accessible and non-traditional performance spaces.
